Local coaches honored in inaugural '35 Under 35'

A handful of Edmond-area high school football coaches earned a prestigious honor Tuesday with their selections to the inaugural “35 Under 35” class.

 

The Oklahoma Football Coaches Association released its top 35 coaches under the age of 35 in the state, and a few familiar names made the list. Edmond Santa Fe’s Austin Maly, Caden MacNeill and Demontre Hurst all made the cut for the Wolves. Edmond North’s John Boogaard represents the Huskies, and Deer Creek’s Jake Hayes rounds out the list for the Antlers.

 

Maly has been coaching the offensive line for Santa Fe since May of last year. He graduated from Northwestern Oklahoma State, where he played o-line from 2012 to 2015, and he previously coached at Sterling College (Kan.) and Southern Nazarene University.

 

MacNeill is in his sixth year coaching receivers at Santa Fe. He graduated from Southwestern Oklahoma State in 2015 and went on to become the strength and conditioning coach at Tarleton State University (Texas) and later at Eagle Mountain-Saginaw (Texas).

 

Hurst is the Wolves' cornerbacks coach who has been with the team since 2021. He played football at the University of Oklahoma from 2009 to 2012 and played for six years in the NFL with the Chicago Bears and Tennessee Titans. He also competed in the XFL for the Tampa Bay Vipers before retiring from football in 2020.

 

Edmond Santa Fe is one of three schools to have three coaches make the list, along with Norman North and Mustang.

 

Prior to becoming Edmond North’s offensive coordinator, Boogaard coached tight ends and fullbacks at Southwestern Oklahoma State. He played football at Western Colorado University, then at Rocky Mountain College in Billings, Mont., where he earned second-team All-Frontier Conference honors.

 

Hayes, Deer Creek's offensive coordinator, began his stint with the Antlers in 2021. He previously coached at Enid, Guthrie and at his alma mater, Evangel University, in Springfield, Mo.
