On February 13th, 2024, Edmond Public Schools (EPS) will hold a critical bond election that will shape the future of education for the district's nearly 26,000 students. The two propositions on the ballot are meant to address pressing needs in facilities, infrastructure, technology, and transportation, and will entail a total bond amount of $147 million.

The district's rapid growth is the driving force behind this bond issue. Edmond's population has exploded in recent years, leading to overcrowded classrooms and strained resources. Redbud Elementary School, for example, reached capacity almost immediately after opening, highlighting the need for additional facilities.

"As our Edmond community continues to grow, so do the needs of our district as a whole," says Dr. Angela Grunewald, Superintendent of EPS. "This bond election will allow us to address these needs now and prepare for future growth, ensuring all our students have access to quality education in a safe and modern environment."

The two propositions before the voters, and the included items, are as follows:

Proposition #1, with a total of $144 million, focuses on managing the district’s growth via the following initiatives:

  • Phase 1 construction of a new elementary school east of I-35

  • Phase 1 construction of a new middle school

  • New Freshman Academy at Santa Fe High School

  • Classroom additions and renovations at multiple elementary schools

  • District-wide technology and infrastructure

  • School equipment including for instructions needs, fine arts, athletics, child nutrition, maintenance and library/media center books, and classroom furniture

  • Safety and Security Enhancements

  • Sports facility improvements, including turf at the baseball and softball fields of all three high schools, as well as improvements at the Mitch Park Aquatic Center

Proposition #2, with a total of $3 million, will build up and maintain the district’s transportation fleet. This proposition allocates funds for purchasing new school buses, activity buses, and SUVs, replacing aging vehicles and ensuring reliable transportation for students and staff.

EPS has made extensive information available online and through community forums to help voters understand the proposed projects and their impact. Resources include detailed brochures, virtual presentations, and Q&A sessions with district officials.

Grunewald encourages everyone to educate themselves about the bond issue and participate in the voting process: “This is a crucial decision that will directly affect the quality of education and the future of our schools."
