Exploring the history of Oklahoma through the use of maps has become easier each day as more and more historical map collections are digitized and made accessible online.  To learn more about what Oklahoma libraries, archives and museums, along with other institutions around the nation are doing to bring historic maps to your fingertips, attend the November 15, 2021 meeting of the Edmond Genealogical Society.  The program will focus on digital platforms at the Oklahoma Historical Society (Gateway to Oklahoma History) and Oklahoma Department of Libraries (Oklahoma Digital Prairie) along with other online resources.  This program will provide a very brief history of cartography or mapmaking technology.  The majority of the program will be devoted to sharing these historic maps with participants and explaining how maps reveal the history of Oklahoma and the world. The program will be presented by Jan Davis, Administrative Archivist for the Oklahoma Department of Libraries who manages the Oklahoma State Archives, which houses the permanent records of state government dating back to statehood.  And, Chad Williams, Director of the Research Division at the Oklahoma Historical Society who has been instrumental in the development of the OHS online research catalog which includes a variety of digitized records.

Meetings are free and open to the public. Programs start at 6:30 p.m. Edmond Genealogical Society meetings are held the third Monday of the month at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. Please note – our new meeting address is 15700 N. Penn, Edmond, OK.  Enter through the doors on the south side of the building.  The church offers plenty of parking and is fully handicap accessible. Masks are required for all attendees.  For more information on EGS, go to: www.rootsweb.com/~okegs, or visit us on Facebook at Edmond Genealogical Society.
